'Once Upon a Time in the North' is 'a brand new story from the world of The Golden Compass' as the cover of the book informs us. In fact, the small book tells the story of how Texan aeronaut Lee Scorseby and his dæmon Hester first encountered polar bear Iorek Byrnison. More or less stranded in inhospitable Novy Odense, a port on the Barents Sea, Lee inadvertantly becomes entangled in the political struggles of the town and has to take sides, whether he wants to or not.While no doubt one reason for the publication of 'Once Upon a Time in the North' is to cash in on the success of the His Dark Materials Trilogy: "Northern Lights", "Subtle Knife", "Amber Spyglass", this book is by now means just that. The story is well told, suspenseful and gives the reader the opportunity to explore a new aspect of Pullman's fictional universe and meet three of its interesting characters again. I certainly thoroughly enjoyed reading this tale of aeronauts, polar bears and politics.In short, 'Once Upon a Time in the North' is entertaining and engaging story and well worth reading. The book also contains some nice illustrations and a game called 'The Peril of the North' (I have not yet tried it out and therefore don't know how good it is).
I may be biased, since I always liked the character of Lee Scoresby and his Daemon, Hester. It is therefor not a big surprise that I liked this small book very much, but I feel that it is a wonderful read for every fan of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. The plot is mainly concerned with the politics of a small mining colony in the high north and, ofcourse, the starting point of Iorek Byrnison's and Lee Scoresby's friendship. The book is another shining example of Phillip Pullmans skill in word-weaving, which alone is reason enough to read this marvellous book.
(Sorry for not writing this in English; I am not very good at writing in English).Ich muss sagen, vor dem Kauf war ich noch ein wenig skeptisch. Eine Geschichte aus dem His-Dark-Materials-Universum, in der es nicht um Lyra oder Will, sondern um zwei Personen geht, die man besten Falls als Nebenpersonen von mittlerer Wichtigkeit bezeichnen kann? Ich bezweifelte stark, dass diese Geschichte auch nur im Entferntesten an den Erfolg der bisherigen vier Bücher anknüpfen könnte, aber dennoch war ich neugierig, was es mit dieser seltsamen kleinen Fortsetzung auf sich hatte, und schließlich siegte meine Neugier.Anfangs sah ich meine Skepsis tatsächlich bestätigt: Das Buch fing mit Handlungen an, die sich für mich wie Belanglosigkeiten anhörten, obwohl ich aber doch zugeben muss, dass mich die Beschreibungen der Personen, besonders Lees und Hesters, schon amüsiert haben - dabei fühlte ich mich auch stark an die bisherigen Bücher erinnert, was für mich schon eine Art Trost für den etwas langweiligen Auftakt war.Langsam, aber sicher entwickelte sich im Verlauf der Story dann doch eine gewisse Spannung, die sich zwar nie so sehr steigert, wie man es von Philip Pullman gewohnt ist, die aber eine Intelligenz und Originalität ausstrahlt, die mich dann doch wieder beeindruckt hat. Sie gibt dem Leser zwar nicht mehr das fantastische Gefühl, in eine andere Welt einzutauchen, aber das hätte in diese Geschichte ohnehin nicht gepasst.Nachdem man dieses Buch gelesen hat, denkt man plötzlich ganz anders über die Buchfigur Lee Scoresby, man versteht ihn und sein Handeln in den anderen Büchern von Philip Pullmans Trilogie viel besser. Ein interessantes Werk, das man als His-Dark-Materials-Fan wirklich mal gelesen haben sollte.
Eigentlich handelt es sich bei diesem Buch nicht wirklich um eine Fortsetzung, sondern vielmehr um die Vorgeschichte von Iorek, dem Panzerbären, Lee Scoresby und Hesters (Lees Dämon). In dieser Geschichte wird erzählt, wie die beiden zu Freunden wurden. Man versteht die Verbindung zwischen ihnen besser, auf die in der Triologie immer wieder angespielt, aber nie ganz erzählt wurde. Ich habe diese Geschichte verschlungen und war etwas traurig, dass ich die Welt von "Dark Materials" so schnell wieder verlassen musste.
